LU carries close to one billion passengers every year. Up four million journeys are made each day. LU operates 11 lines and 270 stations.

The system is currently undergoing transformation. The upgrade programme will deliver 30% more capacity across the network. CBS Outdoor has committed to transforming the advertising estate in line with LU’s own aspirations. We are working with care and collaboration in order to move into the 21st century creating a world-class advertising solution for a world-class tube system.

Advertising has been displayed on the Underground for 100 years. It occupies over 150,000 square meters and as such, has a major impact on the environment and the customers that use it. As part of our transformation programme we are eliminating wet posting with the introduction of a bespoke material exclusively designed for the underground. We worked with 3m to produce a technology that would enable dry
posting – a world first!

We have embarked on an ambitious plan developing new technologies and furniture design, all of which we are now putting in place. The environment is so unique it meant we needed to push some major technical boundaries. We created a common design language for all displays that works for all station environments. Our 29,000 inventory strong traditional estate is being upgraded, framed, illuminated and modernised. From crosstrack media walls to glazed escalator panels, we are carefully applying design principles that deliver consistency of quality and presentation that enhance the environment.

In addition we have introduced the most pioneering and largest scale digital network in any metro system in the world, creating a digital proposition that is not only the envy of our competitors, but enhances customer’s experience and embraces the principles behind creating a world – class station.
