Viacom Outdoor wins London Underground and Victoria Coach Station advertising contracts
• World’s biggest outdoor contract
• Investment to change the face of London’s Tube network
• New innovation to establish digital outdoor as a mainstream media
London Underground and Transport for London have today confirmed Viacom Outdoor, the UK division of CBS Outdoor, has been awarded the London Underground and Victoria Coach Station advertising contracts.
The appointment of Viacom Outdoor to run both contracts confirms CBS Outdoor’s position as a leading global outdoor media business and the world’s no.1 transport advertising company.
The London Underground contract, the largest of its kind in the world will run for 8.5 years and includes management and maintenance of all advertising locations across London’s Tube network - consisting of 33,000 poster sites at 275 London Underground stations, as well as 88,000 panels inside Tube trains. The Victoria Coach Station contract includes advertising rights at what is the busiest station in the UK.
In what will be a legacy-project for London in the run-up to the 2012 Olympics, Viacom Outdoor will now launch a substantial programme of investment in the Tube environment, enhancing the experience of Londoners on the move and creating a world-class advertising estate.
The investment programme, in excess of £50m, will include a range of new digital technologies, including the roll out of Digital Escalator Panels already at Tottenham Court Road station as well as digital cross-track projection. This large-scale investment programme will ensure the London Underground is the leading media brand in London in the run up to the Olympics and beyond. Viacom Outdoor plans to unveil its full transformation programme at a launch event in June in London.
After an exhaustive 18-month bid process, London Underground chose Viacom Outdoor for its strategic and innovative approach, its logistical capabilities, its unrivalled safety record and ability to maximise advertising returns.
"Safety always has been and will continue to be our number one Priority. Our unrivalled safety record and plans to substantially improve station ambience and enhance passengers' travel experience featured very strongly in our bid submission," said Mark Pettler, Viacom Outdoor’s Operations and Technical Director.
Viacom Outdoor has been responsible for managing advertising across London’s Underground system for the last 12 years, during which time it has grown revenues well in excess of the outdoor sector.
Tom Goddard, CEO Viacom Outdoor Europe said: “These appointments are a significant part of our European growth strategy and a fitting endorsement of our innovative approach to the outdoor sector. Our investment programme will ensure that we deliver a world-class Tube for a world-class city. I am immensely proud of the UK team’s market-beating track record and ground-breaking bid submission.”
Andrew Oldham, Joint Managing Director of Viacom Outdoor said: “London Underground’s decision to award these contracts to Viacom Outdoor after a highly competitive tender process is a great endorsement of our approach. We offered a winning combination of innovation, commercial success and unmatchable expertise in running the contract safely and effectively. In short, we offered the surety of a successful incumbent coupled with a fresh new approach.
“This is a defining moment in the development of outdoor media. Viacom Outdoor’s programme of investment across the London Underground network will mark a fundamental change to the advertising landscape in London and the UK.
“We now plan to implement a transformational development programme for advertising across the London Underground enabling even more effective ways of capturing and captivating consumers on the move. This will be the world's first and largest digital network with a captive audience guaranteeing dwell time and engagement – it is in effect the launch of a new medium for London. This will be a legacy project for the capital.”
